A little wind noise builds up around the windscreen pillars as speed increases, but road and suspension noise rarely break the calm in the cabin. It's a shame the same can't be said of the engines; all the three-cylinder engines are noisy, especially at low speeds, but the real villain is the 1.9-litre diesel, which is loud and gruff compared with modern diesel engines.

Completely Nemo! Nemo Concept illustrates the surprising closeness between Citroën Nemo clown fish and his namesake. Like the fish, Nemo Concept can be seen as a "piccoletto" among their fellow human beings. However, its size will translate into an advantage, especially in the way traffic.

N.S. triples limit for minor injury insurance payouts in motor vehicle crashes
Finance Minister Graham Steele said Wednesday the cap for minor injuries will go from $2,500 to $7,500 under legislation introduced by the NDP.
The new limit will be indexed to inflation, making it the highest in Canada, and Steele argues an actuarial study shows it won't mean higher insurance rates.
"It is best of both worlds," he said. "We get a better insurance regime and we get it at no additional costs to Nova Scotians."
He said the actuarial study by Oliver Wyman Ltd. is proof that it won't be necessary for insurance companies to hike premiums to pay for the increased payouts.
"We are absolutely confident, absolutely confident, that these changes can be absorbed without an increase in automobile insurance premiums," Steele told a news conference.
To raise rates, he said the insurance companies will have to prove their costs have increased before the provincial regulator, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.
The act will have a new definition, similar to the one in Alberta, which provides a more precise definition of minor injury as including "strains, sprains and whiplash-associated disorders." That will narrow the number of people making minor injury claims, but also allow a broader range of people to sue for higher damages.
The government is also planning to introduce further amendments that will allow consumers to buy "full-tort coverage," which allows them to buy insurance that covers the cost of injuries, whatever their nature.
Steele said the province plans a wider review of auto insurance prior to April 1, 2011.
The cap on minor injuries has been criticized by victims of car crashes since it was introduced in 2003 to help insurance companies reduce soaring premiums. Victims have argued in court cases that the limit was too low to compensate for the pain and suffering they went through from injuries suffered in crashes.
The Liberals chastised the NDP for failing to make the changes retroactive to 2003 for car crash victims.
Leo Glavine, the party's critic on the insurance issue, noted that while in opposition the New Democrats had frequently brought victims of crashes to the legislature to publicly criticize the system brought in by the previous Conservative government.
"I remember the mantra, 'We will fix a wrong.' That's not part of today's changed Insurance Act," said Glavine.
Steele said the actuarial report shows that applying the law retroactively would have cost $69 million - and caused a wider premium hike for all drivers.
Others critics questioned Steele's assurance that rates would remain steady.
"My concern is that the cost of insurance will go up for Nova Scotians," said Allan MacMaster, a Conservative.
He predicted more litigation under the amended act, driving up costs that the insurance companies will seek to recover, he said.
Bill Adams, vice-president Atlantic for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, said the industry can't predict yet what the impact of the changes will be on its rates.
"It will add costs to the auto insurance system. But what the effects will be for the premiums, we don't know at this time," he said.
The new system goes into effect immediately, but the insurance companies will only be required to process new claims starting July 1 to give them time to adjust their systems.
Review of 2008 Cadillac CTS
Inside, the entry-level Cadillac's cabin is constructed of higher-quality materials. Buyers have a choice of attractive carbon-fiber or real wood accents, and these frame an aluminum-trimmed center stack and console. Bright metallic accents also stylishly adorn the gauges, primary controls and dash vents. It's a classy look that avoids looking busy and overdone. Backseat passengers enjoy more than an inch of additional rear legroom, thanks to slimmer front seats.
If the passengers in the 2008 Cadillac CTS are happier, the driver will border on giddy, owing to the extensively retuned suspension and new powertrains. Cadillac chassis engineers spent a great deal of development time on Germany's famed Nürburgring road course, and it shows on even the well-controlled standard setup. Two additional sport suspension choices further dial up the fun.
Hummer HX Concept
Among other features, the HX gets a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT
In its final concept form, the E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly with removable doors and fender flairs.
“Working as a team, you realize it’s more than one person influencing the vehicle,” said Rojas. “You can see the inspiration from each of our designs in the final concept vehicle. We’re all proud to have the chance to see our sketches become reality.”

Ener1 Lithium-ion Battery System
Ener1 Lithium-ion Battery System
NEW YORK, July 27 -- A new, fully integrated electric drive train developed by electric vehicle pioneer, Think, and powered by a lithium-ion battery system made by U.S.-based EnerDel (subsidiary of Ener1, Inc. Nasdaq: HEV), has been delivered to Japan Post via Zero Sports. Zero Sports of Japan has been selected by Japan Post as one of the conversion partners for delivering vehicles as part of a comprehensive on-road testing program which has been fast-tracked by the Japan Postal Service to electrify their fleet of 22,000 delivery vehicles. With the support of strategic partner ITOCHU Corporation, who organized this project, Ener1 provided engineering support on the delivery of the first two postal service vehicles to Japan Post via Zero Sports.
The drivetrain is being used to convert a gasoline -powered truck to run entirely on electric drive. The real -life data will be shared with other major users and potential customers of electric vehicles, including other postal fleets in Europe and the Americas.
Initially developed for the Th!nk City electric car, the complete system is the first of its kind to provide off-the-shelf availability combined with made-to-order performance in a wide variety of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) applications.
"The ability to deliver a fully integrated, road-ready package that can be quickly tailored to suit a wide range of vehicle solutions is a major step forward for both of our companies," said Ener1 Chairman and CEO Charles Gassenheimer. "By significantly reducing time-to-market for our customers and meeting accelerated production milestones has opened up avenues of opportunity in exciting new programs. We are happy to be able to announce one such program today."
The new technology platform being utilized for this program unites Think's industry-leading EV drive system with EnerDel's award-winning lithium-ion battery technology. A spin-out of Ford Motor Company in 2003, Think Global has more than 18 years' experience in producing environmentally friendly vehicles. The two companies began an active partnership in 2007, with EnerDel developing a 26-kWh battery system for the Th!nk City vehicle, the first pure electric vehicle of its kind to use the next- generation technology.
"We have seen growing interest in supplying Think's proprietary EV drive system to third parties, a significant new business line and revenue opportunity," said Think Global CEO Richard Canny. "Our long standing relationship with EnerDel has culminated in one of the most advanced battery electric drive train systems in the world, producing reliable, high performance systems, which are both cost-effective and highly adaptable."
The Japan Postal Service is currently converting 25 percent of its fleet of combustion engine vehicles to electric drive as part of a government push to accelerate market adoption and infrastructure development for electric drive vehicles. It is anticipated that federal fleets across the world will be soon to follow their example. Initially they will develop a fleet of pure electric vehicles for testing in general business and sales use in the Kanagawa and Tokyo Prefectures, where the two conversion vehicles are currently undergoing on road testing. A picture of the vehicle may be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/meauur.
"Asia has long pioneered the future of electric drive, and Japan in particular has been a global leader in advancing its adoption," Gassenheimer said. "We are pleased to be working on such a high-profile project, and excited to be contributing EnerDel's proprietary lithium-ion battery technology designed and produced here in America. Working alongside our European partner Think, this has become a valuable global enterprise."
ITOCHU Corporation, a multi-billion dollar Japanese trading company and seed investor in Ener1 has been instrumental in expanding the Ener1 and Think commercial presence in Japan through its broad sales and marketing network. Ener1 is also partnering with Kyushu Electric Power ("KEPCO"), one of the largest public power and utility companies in Japan to create and manufacture rapid recharging systems for electric vehicles.
About Ener1, Inc.:
Ener1 develops and manufactures compact, high performance lithium-ion batteries to power the next generation of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. The publicly traded company is led by an experienced team of engineers and energy system experts at its EnerDel subsidiary located in Indiana. Ferrari’s Dino
It's the supercar scoop of the year! Auto Express has had exclusive access to insider details and can now reveal all the details of the Italian legend’s most important new model of the decade. Yes, the Dino is back!
Taking the latter part of its name from Enzo Ferrari’s son, our contacts are confident that the eventual title will be ‘420 Dino’, with the number referring to the V8 engine’s size.
Back in Italy, one fierce debate is still raging between Ferrari, Pininfarina – the car’s designer – and Ferrari’s owner, Fiat. While all indicators still lean toward the Dino being a coupé-cabriolet with a folding hard-top, some bosses would prefer to launch the entry-level model as a berlinetta hard-top GTB first, followed soon after by a targa GTS.
This would follow the trend set by the 246 Dino GT and GTS from 1968 and 1971, and the 308 GTB and GTS from 1975 and 1977.
Audi R8 Club Sport 2011
Spy photographers just spotted Audis club sport racer the Audi R8 CS. With its big fixed rear wing, big round exhaust pipes, bigger diffuser and re-designed rear bumper (air outlets on the sides) it really sticks out compared to a “normal” R8 V10. Front bumper is also different with its small wings on both sides. Except for a power boost, we expect it to have lost some weight as well to make the CS package complete.
